Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy is a healthcare profession that rehabilitates patients of all ages with injuries, disorders, and impairments to help them to regain their independence as well as improve their quality of life using evidence-based treatments. Occupational therapy uses a hands-on approach to treatment — not only are the physical aspects of your injury addressed, but the emotional impact of your injury is also taken into account. Even if you are unable to regain your full mobility and you have a chronic injury, your occupational therapist will work with you to help you to adapt to your environment (your home, job, or even hobby), by recommending assistive devices and educating you in compensatory techniques so that you can achieve optimal outcomes.
Hand Therapy
Hand therapy is a speciality area which rehabilitates patients with hand and upper extremity injuries and disorders either after surgery or without surgery. Hand therapists focus on orthopedic injuries and they typically treat the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. You may ask why you would need a hand therapist. We use our hands to complete all of our daily activities: holding our cell phones, meal preparation, dressing, and driving. The anatomy of the hand is very intricate and when you succumb to a hand injury or require surgery, you will need to work with a hand therapist who has undergone advance training in this area. Your hand therapist will use a variety of treatments to help you to return to work, resume your usual daily activities, and even enable you to enjoy your favorite hobbies again.
Hand therapists fabricate custom made orthoses for protection of a repaired tendon, a healing bone, or support after a wrist or finger sprain. They may also recommend prefabricated splints for support and immobilization or to correct a deformity. Call us to find out which one is appropriate for you!
